Renault 5 Turbo
The Renault 5 Turbo, unveiled in 1980, marks a turning point in Renault's sporting history.
Designed for rallying, it adopted a unique architecture with a 1.4-litre turbocharged cast-iron Cléon engine in a mid-rear position, producing 160 hp for just 970 kg.
A unique feature: it carries two fuel tanks totalling 91 litres, guaranteeing range and endurance in competition. Its Garrett turbocharger uses a specific 0.36 A/R, developed exclusively for this model.
To homologate the future Maxi 5 Turbo, Renault built
200 examples known as "8221", recognisable in particular by their different crankshaft. These rare versions have become highly sought-after collector's items.
Renault Sport also produced customer rally versions: Cevennes,
Tour de Corse and Maxi 5 Turbo, whose power output exceeded 350 hp.
These evolutions allowed the R5 Turbo to shine on special stages worldwide.
More than 40 years after its launch, the R5 Turbo remains an automotive legend, combining innovation, aggression and passion. A true icon of the 80s, it is today one of the most emblematic and coveted Renault models.
The Renault 5 Turbo engine
The R5 Turbo's engine is derived from the Cléon 1400 block, coded 840-730.
A specific variant, the C7K700 for the 8221 series, is distinguished by a crankshaft with a slightly longer stroke.
This engine comes as standard with forged Mahle pistons, forged con rods and a raised cylinder head for greater rigidity. The valves, in Nimonic alloy, are sodium-cooled. The camshaft has a 260° duration with asymmetric timing of 28-52 / 66-14.
The turbocharger is a specially designed Garrett T3 A/R 0.36.
A new trochoid oil pump with increased flow. On the transmission side: a Sachs MZ190 twin-plate clutch on a cast-iron flywheel.
Induction: air-to-air intercooler in the driver's-side rear wing.
Exhaust: stainless-steel manifold (not Inconel).
Fuelling: K-Jetronic.
Specifications:
76 mm bore – 79 mm stroke · Side camshaft · Hemispherical cylinder head · Trochoid oil pump · Sodium-cooled valves · Twin-plate clutch · Forged pistons & con rods

⚠️ R5 Turbo engine failures – common problems
The main causes of engine breakdowns and failures are:
- Exhaust valve head failure
- Cracked cylinder
- Perforated distributor capsule
- Camshaft / tappet wear
- Broken distributor drive gear
- Low oil pressure
- Head gasket leak
- Premature wear of the valve-clearance adjusting screws
- Non-conforming combustion (K-Jet injection)
- Micro-cracking of the flywheel
These failures can have common or very different causes.
An accurate diagnosis must be established through methodical questioning and thorough checks.
