Technical expertise & reverse engineering for classic automotive parts
Mespiecesauto supports classic sports car projects through three key areas:
reverse engineering, technical consulting and failure analysis.
Reverse engineering
Remanufacturing a part by understanding its specifications,
its materials and its constraints.
Technical consulting
Supporting parts selection, engine rebuilds
and coherent technical assemblies.
Failure analysis
Understanding the causes of wear, breakage, overheating
or lubrication failure.
Reverse engineering
Remanufacturing is not imitation. It is understanding.
With the rise of youngtimers and classic cars, many players have entered the parts remanufacturing market. Today, more parts are available, but there are also more problems: approximate shapes, unsuitable materials, incorrect tolerances or poorly understood specifications.
Since 2007, Mespiecesauto has been working to preserve automotive technical heritage: period drawings, manufacturer archives, technical documents, industrial contacts and specialist know-how. Finding reliable drawings or information can sometimes take one to two years for a single project.
For us, remanufacturing a part is not about visually imitating it.
Remanufacturing means understanding its function, its constraints, its materials,
its tolerances and its original specifications.
We also work closely with former engineers, technicians and specialists connected to manufacturers and suppliers, who share part of their experience and knowledge with us.
At the beginning of each project, our work consists of gathering as much technical data as possible:
drawings, manufacturer archives, supplier documents, specialist publications or SAE archives (Society of Automotive Engineers).
This documentary research, combined with the network we have developed since 2007, allows us to move faster, but above all more accurately.
A true specification sheet
Once the data has been gathered, we establish a true technical specification sheet:
dimensions, material, treatment, mechanical function, operating constraints
and known weak points of the original part.
Case study
Remanufacturing of R5 Alpine camshafts
The remanufacturing of R5 Alpine camshafts required nearly
20 months of work, with several hundred hours of research.
- Definition of the material
- Study of the foundry process
- Lift profile analysis
- 4 laboratory testing phases, including metallographic analysis.
- Numerous real-world tests
This type of development illustrates our approach: understanding the part before reproducing it.
Case study
Reverse engineering of the Sierra Cosworth expansion tank
The development of the expansion tank for the Sierra Cosworth 3-door required a genuine reverse-engineering process, from the analysis of the original part through to validation under severe conditions.
- ensure the overall consistency of a project
- Definition of the mechanical constraints and weak areas
- Addition of internal reinforcements to limit deformation
- Complete manufacture of the injection tooling
- Fatigue, overpressure and thermal stress testing
The objective was not only to reproduce the shape of the tank, but to correct the known weaknesses of the original part while preserving its compatibility and function.
Technical advice
Listen, advise, guide
At Mespiecesauto, technical advice is not limited to choosing a part or finding a compatible reference. Our role is to ensure the overall consistency of a project, whether it is an engine rebuild, a return to original configuration or tuning.
Our knowledge of classic sports engines and vehicles, acquired over more than 20 years, allows us To advise is to understand the mechanical assembly, to identify what must be corrected and what should be changed according to your expectations and the technical requirements, so that a good part is fitted into a sound, consistent and clearly defined base. : its role, its constraints, its interactions with the other components and the possible consequences of a poor technical choice.
This overall view allows us to guide our customers on the essential operations, the points to check, the parts to improve when justified, but also the components that are best left original.
The goal is simple: build a reliable, consistent assembly and suited to the vehicle's use, without needlessly modifying what already works.
For us, advising does not mean selling one more part.
An engine failure or breakdown can seem problematic, sometimes even catastrophic. Yet when properly analysed, it often becomes a valuable source of information.
Our technical database, built up over more than 20 years, allows us to get to the bottom of every subject and confirm the essential points, even in the most complex cases. Every project has its own constraints : there are almost as many configurations as there are customers.
We can adapt an engine to a specific need, but any adaptation must respect its technical limits. It is precisely this work of analysis and balance that we carry out with you.
Good advice often starts with a conversation
A few minutes of discussion are enough to understand your engine, your use, your constraints and your expectations. It is often at this point that we can distinguish what absolutely must be reworked, what can be improved, and what is best kept original.
This technical discussion is free of charge: take advantage of it before starting work, changing a configuration or ordering a part. A simple phone call often avoids a costly mistake and gets you started on a sound, consistent base suited to your project.

                              Failure analysis
Observe, document, conclude
In mechanics, humility is essential: the more you learn, the more you realise how much remains to be understood. This is precisely why a failure must be approached methodically, without jumping to conclusions.
In mechanics, a breakage is not just a failure: it helps to understand the limits of an assembly, to identify a weakness, to confirm a hypothesis or to progress in making a unit more reliable. In powertrain development, the controlled destruction of parts or engines is even part of the validation process.
When facing a failure, conclusions are often reached too quickly. A broken part gets blamed, when it is sometimes only the visible consequence of the problem, not its real cause. A valve, a bearing shell, a piston, a camshaft or a gasket can fail as a result of a deeper fault: lubrication, temperature, mechanical clearance, assembly, material, excessive stress or incompatibility between several components.
At Mespiecesauto, engine failure analysis is part of our expertise, but also of our passion for mechanics. Every failure calls for a method: observe, question, cross-check the clues and avoid hasty conclusions.
Our role is to help you ask the right questions, with an approach that is both broad and precise. The goal is not to replace parts needlessly, but to identify the real cause of the problem, favouring simple, quick and inexpensive checks first.
Often, the solution is not found in the most spectacular element of the breakage, but in a detail: a trace of overheating, abnormal wear, excessive clearance, a contact mark, an assembly error or an inconsistency in the mechanical assembly. It is precisely this detail that makes it possible to understand the failure and prevent it from happening again.
Solving an engine failure often means going against the obvious.
As in racing, first instincts can be misleading: what you think you understand at first sight is not always the real cause of the failure.
In mechanics, humility is essential: the more you learn, the more you realise how much remains to be understood. This is precisely why a failure must be approached methodically, without jumping to conclusions.
Either we will have already encountered a similar situation and can point you in the right direction quickly, or we will carry out the analysis with you, step by step.
applied to classic sports vehicles.
In the vast majority of cases, an initial analysis can be carried out remotely from a few simple elements: photos, the context of the failure, the engine's history, operating conditions, fitted parts and checks already performed. This information often makes it possible to identify a reliable lead, prioritise the checks and avoid unnecessary disassembly or replacements.
Need a technical opinion or a failure analysis?
An engine failure, an unobtainable part, a complex refabrication or a doubt about an assembly should not be handled with guesswork. Every case deserves a serious technical analysis, based on the symptoms, the measurements, the parts observed and hands-on experience.
Contact us to tell us about your project or your problem. Depending on the elements available, we can point you in the right direction, identify a probable lead, or support you through a more complete advice, diagnostic or reverse-engineering process.
