Clio 16S & Clio Williams
The Clio 16S, launched in 1991, introduced the F7P 1.8 L 16-valve engine of 140 hp, able to rev to 7,200 rpm. Compact and light (960 kg), it combines short gearing, a sharp front axle and ventilated brakes for incisive handling. An heir to the Renault GTIs, it wins you over with its fiery engine and its effectiveness on winding roads.
In 1993, Renault Sport unveiled the Clio Williams, a rally-homologation version fitted with the F7R 2.0 L block, uprated to 150 hp. Its increased torque, wider track and specific chassis make it even more stable and capable. With its gold Speedline wheels and its Bleu Sport 449 paint, it instantly became an icon.
Initially built in 3,800 units, the Williams was extended into series 2 and 3 to meet huge demand. It quickly made its mark in Group A and N rallying, confirming its sporting DNA.
Today, the Clio 16S and Clio Williams embody thegolden age of French GTIs, blending style, mechanical character and a formidable chassis.
Two models that have become must-haves for Renault Sport enthusiasts and collectors.
Clio 16S & Williams engine block — F7P / F7R
- F cast-iron block base + 16-valve alloy cylinder head.
- Clio 16S: F7P, 1,764 cm³.
- F7P bore/stroke: 82 × 83.5 mm.
- Compression: 10:1.
- DOHC valvetrain, 4 valves/cyl.
- Exhaust valves sodium-cooled.
- Injection Bosch Motronic sequential multipoint.
- 140 hp at 6,500 rpm, 16.5 mkg at 4,250 rpm.
- Clio Williams: F7R, 1,998 cm³.
- F7R bore/stroke: 82.7 × 93 mm.
- Compression: 10:1, same cylinder head as the F7P.
- Nitrided forged crankshaft, specific intake.
- Sodium exhaust valves too.
- 150 hp at 6,100 rpm, 18.2 mkg at 4,500 rpm.
- 16S revs higher; Williams has more torque.
