Tips for rebuilding your Clio Williams engine

When rebuilding an engine on the Clio Williams, we recommend carrying out a full metrology check. The points below are priority warnings.

Inspection points

  • Hydraulic tappets
    Empty each tappet and test the piston movement: it must move freely. If in doubt, replace them.
    Clio 16S / Clio Williams F7P–F7R hydraulic tappets
  • Intermediate shaft bushings — working clearance
    According to Renault data, the diametral clearance must be between 38 and 112 µm. Clearance out of tolerance causes an internal oil leak and a drop in oil pressure overall. Replacement should be entrusted to a professional.
    Clio 16S / Clio Williams oil pump bushings
  • Big end — bearing housing
    Check the big-end diameter: it is not the tab that retains the bearing shell, but the clamping by the housing diameter. Any out-of-spec connecting rod must be replaced immediately.
