Why is replacing the hydraulic tappets essential on the Clio 16S / Clio Williams?
The hydraulic tappet adjusts the valve clearance through the movement of its piston. A seized piston can no longer compensate for the operating clearance: excess clearance appears and this results in a characteristic ticking.
Origin of the ticking
This noise comes from a simple but destructive phenomenon: as the clearance is not taken up, the camshaft strikes the valve directly after passing the quieting ramp. This part of the cam normally brings the parts gently into contact before the valve opens fully. The result: instead of progressive contact, it is a true hammer blow on the valve stem.
Possible consequences
The valves can peen over, then requiring a regrind or even replacement, which often means removing the cylinder head.
Fitting tip
The hydraulic tappets must be fitted empty of oil. Before fitting, it is advisable to expel the storage oil by working the piston: it must move freely. Oil pressure will naturally fill the tappet chamber, and the clearance will set itself after a few tens of minutes of running.
