Thermal analysis & advice
On the Clio 16s and Clio Williams, cooling efficiency does not depend solely on the size of the radiator. A bigger radiator does not necessarily cure engine overheating.
Overheating is very often linked to internal fouling of the core, which considerably reduces coolant flow. To understand this better, you can read our dedicated article: Copper or aluminium radiator: which is more effective?
Fuelling also plays a fundamental role. A mixture that is too lean (too much air, not enough fuel) raises exhaust gas temperature, which puts extra load on the cooling system to dissipate the heat.

Filling and bleeding instructions – Clio 16s / Clio Williams
The Clio 16s and Clio Williams have a radiator with no direct filler cap. The system is filled by gravity from the expansion tank.
Filling procedure:
- Open the expansion tank cap
- Fill the system until coolant flows from the return pipe
- Close the caps once flow is reached
- Start the engine and hold it at 1,500 rpm
- Top up the level for about 4 minutes
♨️ Bleeding:
Full bleeding of the system must be done with the engine running for about 10 minutes, with the heater fully open.

The cooling system is made up of the following components:
- Main aluminium radiator
- Expansion tank
- Heater matrix
- Auxiliary electric water pump
- Modine (oil/water heat exchanger)
- Hoses and connecting pipes
It is recommended to check the condition of all components and hoses when replacing the radiator.
