The Renault 12 Gordini

Launched in 1970, the Renault 12 Gordini took over from the famous R8 Gordini, transposing Amédée Gordini's sporting spirit onto a more modern, more versatile saloon. It received a 1,565 cc 4-cylinder engine from the R16 TS, carefully tuned and fed by two twin-choke Weber carburettors, producing around 113 hp SAE. Combined with a 4-speed gearbox with short ratios, the drivetrain delivered noteworthy performance for the time, with close to 185 km/h flat out and 0 to 100 km/h in under ten seconds.
The chassis was upgraded with specific suspension, anti-roll bars and disc brakes on all four wheels, guaranteeing safer, more consistent handling. Its visual identity was strong: French blue paint with white stripes, driving lamps at the front, exclusive wheels and a cabin fitted with bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and full instrumentation.

Built in around 5,000 units, the R12 Gordini also became the car of the Coupe Gordini, a one-make series that popularised motor racing in 1970s France. Less radical than the R8 but more family-friendly, it embodies the spirit of accessible motorsport and remains a sought-after classic, regularly celebrated at gatherings and the famous "Jour G" events.
