The Renault 12 Gordini
Launched in 1970, the Renault 12 Gordini succeeded the famous R8 Gordini and carried Amédée Gordini's sporting spirit over to a more modern, versatile saloon. It received a 1,565 cm³ 4-cylinder engine from the R16 TS, carefully tuned and fed by two twin-barrel Weber carburettors, producing around 113 hp SAE. Paired with a close-ratio 4-speed gearbox, the mechanicals delivered performance that was notable for the time, with nearly 185 km/h top speed and 0–100 km/h in under ten seconds.
The chassis was adapted with specific suspension, anti-roll bars and disc brakes on all four wheels, ensuring safer, more consistent handling. Its visual identity is strong: France blue paint set off with white stripes, front driving lights, exclusive wheels and an interior with bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and full instrumentation.
Produced in around 5,000 units, the R12 Gordini also became the car of the Coupe Gordini, a promotional series that popularised motor racing in 1970s France. Less hardcore than the R8 but more family-friendly, it embodies the 'accessible sport' spirit and remains a sought-after classic today, regularly celebrated at gatherings and the famous Jour G.
