Renault 5 Turbo 265 hp camshaft – Reference 7711064935 – Renault Sport specifications

This Renault 5 Turbo camshaft (ref. 7711064935) is the high-performance version developed for 265 hp engine builds, in accordance with the Renault Sport technical specifications used in competition.

  • Net cam lift: 6.13 mm
  • Timing: 47-65 / 79-33, measured at 0.19 mm at the cam, according to the Renault standard
  • Material: chill-cast iron, using the same process as the original part for optimum reliability and strength

Designed to retain the behaviour and reliability of a factory-type setup while allowing the Cléon-Fonte engine to breathe more efficiently, this camshaft provides a significant gain at high rpm. It is the most versatile camshaft for a performance build.

Compatibility

  • Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2
  • C7K engines and 265 hp prepared derivatives
Technical specifications

The camshaft: a critical component on the Renault 5 Turbo

The camshaft is a sensitive component on the Renault 5 Turbo. Many owners have suffered engine failures linked to two main causes:

  • Fitting a remanufactured camshaft made of steel
  • Failure to check the end float

Why avoid a steel camshaft?

The 5 Turbo uses a side camshaft layout, which generates higher mechanical loads. When a steel camshaft is made, it has to be heat-treated after machining. The treatment depth is then shallow (0.5 to 0.7 mm).

Alternating stresses end up attacking the shaft from the inside. Renault had chosen a dual-material process allowing deep treatment (5 to 6 mm) thanks to rapid cooling of the cam cores.

The drawbacks of steel on the 5 Turbo:

  • Excessive stiffness: at the cam/tappet contact, steel deforms less than cast iron, the contact patch is smaller and the Hertzian pressure increases by around 30%, accelerating cam and tappet wear.
  • Weakened distributor gear: this part needs resilience to absorb the successive shocks. Steel that is too stiff leads to gear breakage.
  • No factory pairing: no gear was ever paired with a camshaft on the R5 Turbo — the parts were listed separately in the parts catalogue.

In the Renault process, the journal section and the gear were not heat-treated, keeping a resilient cast iron. Mespiecesauto has faithfully reproduced this dual-material process after 18 months of development, to guarantee reliable camshafts.

The importance of checking the end float

The camshaft end float is crucial: the distributor gear tends to push the shaft forwards. The retaining plate is there to hold it back.

  • If the float is too small: the load is transferred to the gear, which can damage it.
  • If the float is too large: the camshaft and the gear become misaligned.

Recommendations before reassembly

Carry out thorough, complete metrology before any reassembly using our Renault 5 Turbo metrology sheet.

For added peace of mind, also replace the tappets with new ones, built to the Renault specification: see the available tappets.
