R5 Alpine / Alpine Turbo Valves – Material, Forging & Technical Specifications

Technical specifications & advice

The steel used for these valves is austenitic steel, and therefore non-magnetic. Normally reserved for exhaust valves for cost reasons, Mespiecesauto has chosen quality by also manufacturing the intake valves from this high-temperature alloy. Our valves undergo heat treatment of the stem, as well as a stellite deposit on the seating face.

Our valves are manufactured using a forging process, ensuring strength and durability. To learn more, please read our article: Forged valves – advantages and strength .

⚙️ R5 Alpine cylinder head data

  • Naturally aspirated cylinder head height: 80.8 mm
  • Turbo cylinder head height: 79.8 mm
  • Combustion chamber volume difference: 2.3 cc in favour of the Alpine Turbo

⚠️ In case of doubt, always check these dimensions: they are essential to maintain the correct compression ratio.

Maintenance & wear

Valves are subjected to high thermal and mechanical stresses. Over time, they wear and often need to be replaced in order to preserve engine performance and reliability.

Renault 5 Alpine / Alpine Turbo Cylinder Head Reassembly Advice

🛠️ R5 Alpine Cylinder Head Installation Advice

Mespiecesauto strongly recommends carrying out a complete metrology check when reassembling the top end of the engine. The minimum steps to follow are:

  • Check the flatness of the cylinder head
  • Check the clearance in the valve guides
  • Measure the cylinder liner protrusion height

⚙️ Advice on associated parts

  • Keep the original springs, retainers and collets: the quality of current replacement parts may be lower and reduce reliability
  • Prefer using a spring preload shim rather than so-called “reinforced” springs
  • Check the condition of the pushrods, tappets and adjustment screws

Reassembly gasket set

Always use a new gasket set when reassembling the engine to ensure proper sealing and reliability.
