Renault 5 Alpine / Alpine Turbo Engine Rebuild Advice

Cylinder Head Gasket & Specific Features of the Cléon Type 840 Engine (R5 Alpine / R5 Alpine Turbo)

The Cléon type 840 engine, fitted notably to the Renault 5 Alpine and R5 Alpine Turbo, has several specific characteristics. Metrology checks must be carried out and the measurements must comply with the specified tolerances, but that is not all.

Essential points to check

  • Camshaft clearance in the engine block: many R5 Alpine / R5 Alpine Turbo engines suffer from low oil pressure due to excessive clearance.
  • Do not install a solid steel camshaft: for physical reasons such as Hertzian contact pressure and gear resilience, this does not work properly. Prefer an original camshaft original profile or reprofiled, or our camshaft.
  • Tappet inspection: check their condition and material. Our tappets are compliant, manufactured from the Renault drawing and according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Avoid oil pump rebuild kits: they do not provide reliable results. So-called “high-flow” oil pumps bring no real benefit; please refer to our video on this subject.
  • End float & distributor drive gear: camshaft end float is essential. Only use original cast iron distributor drive gears.
  • Cylinder liner height / protrusion: an essential criterion to ensure proper sealing of the cylinder head gasket, both between cylinders and against external leaks.
  • Cylinder head gasket diagnosis: in case of doubt, read our article: Renault 5 Alpine Cylinder Head Gasket Problem – Complete Guide .

Why choose Mespiecesauto?

Mespiecesauto has been a genuine remanufacturer of parts for classic and sports cars since 2007. We are not just a reseller: our mission is reverse engineering.
