Renault 21 2L Turbo
The Renault 21 Turbo was introduced in 1987 as Renault’s benchmark sports saloon. It was powered by the J7R engine, a 2.0L 4-cylinder unit with an aluminium block and 8-valve aluminium cylinder head, cast iron liners, a Garrett T3 turbocharger and an air-to-air intercooler.
The first version produced 175 hp DIN at 5,200 rpm (Phase 1, 1987–1988). In 1990, the catalysed Phase 2 version was reduced to 162 hp and introduced the “Quadra” four-wheel-drive transmission.
The Renix electronic management system controls multipoint injection, ignition and boost pressure regulation. Timing is belt-driven, with compact combustion chambers and a low-inertia turbocharger.
The gearbox is a reinforced 5-speed manual unit. The chassis uses a pseudo-McPherson front suspension and a trailing-arm rear axle, with specific settings for the Turbo version.
Braking is handled by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, with ABS fitted as standard from the start of production.
The first 500 Renault 21 Turbo models were equipped with manually adjustable door mirrors.
With a kerb weight ranging from 1,210 to 1,320 kg depending on the version, the 21 Turbo delivered impressive performance: around 8.0 seconds from 0–100 km/h and a top speed close to 220 km/h in catalysed version.

The Renault 21 2L Turbo Engine
The R21 engine is derived from the Renault 829 engine originally fitted to the R20. It is a 2.0-litre engine with an 88 mm bore and an 82 mm stroke.
This engine was originally fitted with specific AE pressure-cast pistons. The block is equipped with independent oil jets. The cylinder head features an overhead camshaft with a timing diagram of 12-52 / 52-12 at 0.7 mm, with valve actuation via rocker arms with pads.
The turbocharger is a Garrett T3 A/R 0.48, specially designed for this application, delivering a boost pressure set at 0.9 bar relative. The Renault 21 Turbo also features a specific exhaust manifold. The timing belt has 115 teeth, not 116.
On the transmission side: Valeo clutch with increased-pressure cover plate, and a clutch disc with damping specific to this version.
