Renault 25 V6 Turbo

Launched in 1984, the Renault 25 succeeded the R20 and R30 with an elegant design by Robert Opron and Gaston Juchet, renowned for its remarkable aerodynamics (Cd 0.28). From the outset it offered a wide range of engines, but Renault aimed higher with a sporty, flagship version. In 1985 came the V6 Turbo 182 hp, powered by the V6 PRV 2.5 L turbocharged by a Garrett turbo. Capable of reaching 220 km/h and covering 0–100 km/h in 7.7 s, it became one of the fastest grand tourers in Europe. In 1987, Renault strengthened its image with the V6 Turbo 205 hp, optimised with electronic management, climbing to 230 km/h and doing 0–100 km/h in 7 s. This version, offered mainly in the Baccara trim, stands out for its assertive luxury: full leather, wood inserts and rich equipment. The R25 also innovated with its technologies: ABS, power steering, voice synthesis and high-end comfort. Adopted by the French State as a presidential and ministerial car, it embodies national prestige and know-how. Today, the V6 Turbo remains an icon: the 182 hp for its boldness, the 205 hp for the peak of the French sporty grand tourer of the 80s.

The Renault 25 V6 Turbo engine

The Z7U is the turbocharged version of the 90° PRV V6, developed for the Renault 25 V6 Turbo from 1985. It derives from the naturally aspirated 2,458 cm³ Z7W block but receives Garrett forced induction and many specific adaptations. Cast-iron block, light-alloy cylinder heads, 6-bearing crankshaft, specific pistons. Forged steel connecting rods, redesigned combustion chambers and a compression ratio lowered to 7.6:1 to accept forced induction. Single overhead camshaft per bank, chain-driven timing.

The turbocharger is a Garrett T3 A/R 0.63, air-cooled early in production then water-cooled, paired with an air-to-air intercooler. Fuelling is handled by Bendix electronic injection, with ignition fully managed by the ECU.

On the lubrication side, a higher-flow oil pump and an external oil cooler ensure reliability. Drive is via a reinforced single-plate clutch and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Power: 182 hp at 5,500 rpm (phase 1) then 205 hp at 5,750 rpm (phase 2), with maximum torque of 29 to 30 mkg available from 2,500 rpm. This engine allowed the R25 to exceed 230 km/h and to embody the French sporty flagship of the 80s.
