Peugeot 205 GTI
Unveiled in 1984, the Peugeot 205 GTI immediately established itself as the benchmark French GTI. Light, agile and sharp, it turned Peugeot's « sacré numéro » into a true sporting icon.
The first version received the fuel-injected 1.6-litre XU5J engine with 105 hp, later increased to 115 hp. At the end of 1986, the 1.9 GTI and its 130 hp XU9JA raised the bar further: 205 km/h flat out, four-wheel disc brakes and an engine response that is still a reference today.
Its incisive, playful and devastatingly effective chassis made it the direct rival of the Golf GTI, on the road as in competition, where the 205 shone from Group N to historic rallying.
In 1987, the 309 GTI took the 1.9 drivetrain in a longer body: more stable and just as effective, it remains one of the best-kept secrets among enthusiasts.
With 330,047 units built from 1984 to 1994, the 205 GTI is today one of the most sought-after youngtimers, with values steadily rising for original examples.
