Renault 17
The Renault 17 is a coupé produced by Renault between 1971 and 1980. Developed on the technical basis of the Renault 12, it stood out with sporty, elegant bodywork reflecting the trends of the seventies. Unlike its sister car the Renault 15, the 17 positioned itself as a more upmarket model, with superior trim and a more assertive character. Officially unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, it marked the arrival of a modern, practical and distinctive hatchback coupé.
The Renault 17 came in several versions, including the 17 TL, the 17 TS and, from 1974, the long-awaited 17 Gordini. The latter brought a sporting dimension thanks to a more powerful engine and specific equipment. Depending on the model, the range was powered by 1.6 or 1.7-litre engines, fed by carburettors or fuel injection. The interior stood out for its comfort, enveloping seats and, for the time, generous instrumentation.
The Renault 17 also shone in motorsport, notably in rallying, where it scored several successes during the seventies. Exported to many countries, it was even sold in North America as the Renault 17 Gordini. Production ended in 1980, making way for the Renault Fuego. Today it remains a well-loved classic, especially in its rare and emblematic Gordini versions, which perfectly embody the spirit of French coupés of that decade.
