Peugeot 306 S16
The Peugeot 306 S16 is the emblematic sports version of the compact from Sochaux built in the 1990s. Launched in 1993, it topped the 306 range and was aimed at keen drivers, at a time when French hot hatches went head-to-head with the Renault 19 16S and the Golf GTI. Under the bonnet, the 306 S16 received a 2.0-litre 16-valve four-cylinder developing 155 hp in its first version, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. In 1996, Phase 2 introduced an evolution of this engine, raised to 167 hp thanks to optimised engine management and a six-speed gearbox — a first in the class. Lively and eager at high revs, this engine took the compact Peugeot to 220 km/h and through 0 to 100 km/h in under 8 seconds.
Its chassis, heir to Peugeot's expertise in suspension design, is one of its greatest strengths. With independent rear suspension and renowned balance, the 306 S16 is considered one of the most effective and enjoyable compacts of its generation. The precise steering and well-judged suspension give it handling that is both playful and safe, appreciated on twisty roads and on track alike.
Inside, the S16 features enveloping bucket seats, full instrumentation and a few discreet sporty touches that reinforce its character without sacrificing the comfort and versatility of a five-seat compact.
Built until 2001, the Peugeot 306 S16 marked its era with its balance of performance, driving pleasure and everyday usability. Today it holds a special place among the French sports cars of the 90s, sought after by collectors and lovers of authentic sensations.
