The 205 Rallye
The Peugeot 205 Rallye, launched in 1988, is a radical version of the famous 205, designed for thrill-seekers and rally homologation. From the moment it appeared, it stood out for its stripped-back presentation and featherweight 794 kg. Its 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine with twin-choke Weber carburettors produces 103 hp — a modest figure put to good use by its extreme lightness. With that power-to-weight ratio, the 205 Rallye delivers lively, playful handling, purpose-built for twisty back roads.
It received specific arch extensions, white Speedline wheels and a tricolour livery that make it instantly recognisable.
Inside, the atmosphere is spartan: thin bucket seats, minimal equipment and a clear determination to shed every unnecessary gram.
The chassis carries over the acclaimed qualities of the 205 GTI, with a rawer, less polished approach.
Its performance allows it to reach 190 km/h and cover 0 to 100 km/h in around 8.7 seconds. Designed for customer competition, it raced in rallies, hillclimbs and on circuits with great success.
The 205 Rallye quickly became a driving school for a whole generation. Its simple, rugged mechanicals lend themselves readily to tuning, which reinforced its popularity in amateur motorsport.
Despite its rudimentary comfort, it wins hearts through the intensity of its driving experience. Built until 1992, it was replaced by Rallye versions with more conventional fuel-injected engines.
Today, original examples are rare and highly sought after, especially in strict period configuration. It embodies the spirit of pure, uncompromising small sports cars — a true icon of the 80s and 90s.
