A310 4-cylinder reinforced head gasket – Custom-made separate fire-ring gasket
The separate fire-ring gasket is the best solution for sealing. (see the explanation below)
Our gasket is fitted, among others, on an ex-Ragnotti A310 4-cylinder shown at Rétromobile 2015.
Thickness and diameter on request, ideal to improve the reliability of your 1596 – 1774 – 1796 or 1860 engine.
The crimped-ring gasket — meaning the ring is “held” inside the gasket — is made of steel or even stainless steel. Originally this ring is a tube crushed to be crimped under pressure, about 1/10 mm thick. On built engines, i.e. engines under heavy loads, it is often these fire rings that fail… it can be fine for a standard engine, but as soon as you want to build something serious it is better to move on to something else.
Some of these gaskets are seen covered with a layer of stainless steel top and bottom, but the base of the gasket is still a standard gasket.
The multi-layer gasket (MLS) is a set of metal sheets stacked and riveted together. With this type of gasket the block’s waviness must be below 10 µm over more than 8 mm and the roughness below 15 µm… The absence of a fire ring on this type of gasket often causes reliability problems on built engines.
The third type is the O-ring. The O-ring requires machining the block and the cylinder head to fit a cylindrical wire acting as a fire ring. The problem with this type is that the modification is irreversible — once the block and head are machined there is no going back. The ring wire is much thinner than on a separate-ring gasket.
The fourth type is the separate ring. The advantage of this kind of gasket is that the fire ring is machined from solid. This ring is on average 20 times thicker than a crimped ring. Unlike the O-ring setup, it requires no machining of the block or the cylinder head — the ring is designed to fit in place just like a standard gasket. It is a very strong stainless-steel ring that withstands very high turbo pressures, above 2.5 bar. As on a standard gasket, the fibre is coated with a silicone bead to absorb the machining roughness of the block. One last very interesting point is the custom-made aspect: we make the gaskets to order with bores to 1/10 of a millimetre and a
